History Of Trailers

Trailers have developed a lot since the first trailers where made for example the whole idea of trailers have changed now, trailers are used to inform the audience what is the movie about and give a background of the story behind the film.

This is the original trailer of Albert Hitchcock's Psycho, as you see it is more than six minutes long and most trailers today are two and a half or three minutes long. Also Albert Hitchcock who was the director of Psycho was also a star in this own right with his own television show. This trailer was the first trailer to air on television, back in those days trailers would only be shown before the screening of a movie in the cinema. Hitchcock also created a lot of anticipation leading up to this movie by the killing of Janet Leigh's character who was a Janet Leigh was a very big hollywood actress and people would have thought that her character would have had a bigger role to play and only feature in the first 30 minuets of the movie.

This is a trailer of the original cinderella in 1950, this trailer was ahead of its time with the use of colour and animation and also the use of editing and sound makes the movie very futuristic. Also the trailer has graphics with the words "The picture the entire world has been waiting for" this would have helped create
anticipation for the release of the movie.

This Trailer is of Oliver Stones Platoon, The editing is very fast in some parts of the trailer which connoted the action part of this movie as it is a thriller. But the use of the happy music used is very ironic and it is a movie about war. Also the mentioning of Oliver Stones first hand experiences with the reality that this movie is based on would persuade the audience that this movie is very passionate and also accurate. Also doing a movie based on the war in vietnam is very risky especially with the american public but with the use of the line "the first real movie about the war in vietnam is platoon" shows that the movie is also inspirational and another Oliver Stone classic.

Editing and sound in the use of its genre.

Editing and sound play a significant role in the identification of the films genre. For example in a action or  thriller the sound needs to be in tune with the actions that are taking place. Also the Editing being used in an action/thriller needs to be fast with a lot of jump shots which connotes the fast moving action scenes used in the film.

You can edit and use sound to make any film into a specific genre for example with the right sound and editing you can make the shining on of the most respected horror movies into a romantic comedy.
