Questionnaire

Please take 5 minutes out of your time to complete my A2 questionaire regarding Trailers, Posters, and magazine covers place click here to start the questionaire.

Narritive Theory

In this trailer I have chosen there is a open structure in which the audience are left wondering about the conclusion of the movie. I have also looked at Propps theory and easily identified the roles of the characters for example the main character played by Denzel Washington is the Hero.

The Narrative of the story start off with an equalibrium, as everything is normal and seems happy, you get this feeling form the Non diagetic music used in the firsts moments of the trailer. And then something disturbes the equalibrium for example the plane crash and the court case.
By using Roland Barthes's Theory helps us understand the storyline behind the trailer by using his five codes and conventions, Barthes's five codes are:

Action - Resolution provided by action for example fight scene.
Enigma - Teases the audience.
Symbolic - connotation.
Semic - Denotation.
Culture - Narrative being a part of a culture for example Goodfellas is a movie based on the cultre of made men in the mafia.

Film promotion analysis

In this post I will be analysing a film poster, magazine cover and a trailer. The movie I have chosen is The Dark Night Raises.

The poster gives a personal identity of the movie as it is familiar with previous posters such as the dark night poster. The poster is more cahotic as there is a red flame of fire around the batman sign just like the old poster but the building around the batman sign are falling which helps the viewer understand that the franchise is coming to an end. If you look at the dark night poster the building in the background is still stable and standing and in the dark night raises poster the building is falling down and barley standing. In both these posters the batman sigh features and also does batman which helps the viewer identify the movie.

The trailer also lets the viewer identify any new characters and give the viewer a feel if the story of the film. The trailer also uses the name of the director Christopher Nolan which will help promote the film.

The release of the dark night raises is one of the most anticipated movies of 2012 so there fore will be on the cover of every big film magazine. The covers will mainly use one of the main characters as the main image as this will be familiar to the film and the readers will relate to the other two movies.

Warner bros use the same house style in all of their big movie posters such as Inception and Dark knight rises this helps the audinece identify the brand. In both these posters they have used the key image as the main star of the movie with the background of buildings.

Golden Trailer Post

The genre I am going to be looking at is horror. This is because I beleive that horror will be a perfect fit for me and my group and the possibilities are endless. Me and  my group have discussed a member of great ideas that we can do for our film trailer already.

The Golden Trailer Awards for Best Horror was 'The Devil Inside', produced by Paramount Pictures. This film trailer contains a lot of suspense in order to keep the viewer interested whilst also scared, depending on whether the viewer is a fan of horror films The film also has an open structure in which the conclusion of the movie is not shown.

Multiple still frames of scenes that take place later in the film are shown in order to show the extent of fear that the viewer may generate whilst watching the film whilst still not revealing too much and only previewing the basic storyline and what the film is all about.

At the end of the trailer, most horror trailers show one last frame, still or very short; which will ineveitably be a scary scene from the film. This is done with this film trailer, showing the same still frame that was shown at the beginning, keeping the constant suspense and ending with the title 'Coming Soon'.
